ThanksCute chicks, Johnn!!
I have never heard of that :/, wonder if its true...
I have never heard that before. I put ACV in my chicken's waterers and Topsy hatched out her own eggs which had no trouble getting out of their shell. I'd need to see the study info or reasoning before I would trust that.
I wonder why someone would say such a thing. There is nothing in ACV to compromise calcification in any way. I sure would be interested in looking at the information in that workshop.
I'm not really sure where to put this...
I guess management will do! I have a lovely Brooodie that just hatched me out a few beautiful babies they are blue britchen marans & silver sussex babies 3 if each they are 2 days old.. I have 1 whom is slow to perk up & has been taking sometime to get going.
Here is my issue.. Before the chicks hatched I cleaned my coop from top to bottom.. DE in every corner.. Ruffled my hen up with it... Never have I had a mite or a louse because I'm so diligent!
I just saw a skin colourd bug on my chicks!! My babies!!
I quickly flipped my hen around looking for signs of bugs on her but nothing.. Looked over my babies.. No bugs!! Now I'm freaking out! What if they have lice??!!
Should I treat my hen with DE & hope it clears things up?? I can't use Sevin around babies do I ?
What do I look for.. What can I possibly do with 2 day old chicks?? I don't want them getting sick because of a parasite!
Advice please..??
**** I took more time looking at my hen.. She has bugs!!! How do I treat with babies?? I put DE deep into her feathers & as soon as she called the chicks to her they were treated...
I changed all bedding & litter & but a thick coat of DE down... Please help what do I do??
Does anyone have any experience with frost bite?, If you look on the pic above on Asparagus's comb it has black tips, are they going to fall off? can i stop them falling off?
Black tips doesn't always mean frostbite. Are your coop temps very low and humidity high? Those would be the conditions to cause frostbite. I've had roosters with black tips before, the Maran got them from having gotten into a fight and having his comb injured. Turns out it was dried blood on him.
The coop temperature is low not sure about the humidity. He also has a little cut on it, I'm not sure what that's off though because he hasn't been fighting.
Vinegar Is known to remove calcium from bones. That is how they make Gelatin and why some vegetarians wont eat jello. (the Vinegar used in this process is hundreds of times stronger than household vinegar) for what its worth vinegar is an acid.
To prove it to yourself take a dried wishbone from either chicken or Turkey. Set it in a non reactive container Glass, Ceramic, or stainless steel. And cover it with white vinegar. In a few days it will have dissolved enough Calcium from the bone to allow you to tie the wish bone in a Knot.
I think someone mistakenly assumed ACV would pass through the digestive system and dissolve the calcium in the egg shell.
That being said You'd have to pickle the whole chicken for it to affect the eggs. LOL.
