Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Just thought I would share this finally got a pic of the nest my guinea sitting on. And Mama getting a snack.

Was a quick sneak snap and run. I estimate 40 eggs. Go crosseyed trying to do an accurate count, even on paint.

And broody BA is still a trooper. Hoping to hatch around the 3rd. SO CLOSE. Got 2 hatchers popping chicks atm to keep me distracted from distracting mamas. Just hoping rain ain't gonna ruin guinea nest. Its been bad flood all week almost. Eggs were high and dry on a brush pile when I saw them. Now water on eggs. Lets root for the guineas!!!!

She is going to be one busy mama if even quarter of them hatch!

What are some chicken breeds that are most likely to go broody?
http://www.citygirlchickens.com/broody_chickens.html

this is a list some1 made for another site.
But nothing is concrete. i have had many dual purpose heavier breeds listed and after 6 year I finally got 1 hen to go broody. Alot of people use bantams, silkies and other feather feet breeds and seem to get super broodies. Others can tell you better. Since I only have had 1 chicken go broody and stick to it.
In the process of making a cross FOR broodiness. Won't have any idea til late fall though just hatching as we speak/type.

Yea my marans are very broody. Very few hatchery large fowl go broody. Even from broody breeds. It can happen on occation but most have some Leghorn in them for better egg laying.

Often people will list hens that are broodies on cl rehiming them since they wanted eggs from their chickens. Its a good way of getting proven desire for babies.
