Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Went out to do bird chores and Penny was on the wrong eggs :barnie I guess the newly laid ones looked more tempting than her old nest. Moved her back. The longest she could have possibly been off them is 24 hours, and it's been warm, so here's hoping nothing happened except maybe the hatch was delayed a day. I'm hoping she hasn't been off them since yesterday when I got her up, and maybe just since this morning, if she got up on her own.

Bunny sat for over 42 days and Smokey did too. She probably will sit it out.

I put 10 eggs under my broody silkie cross last year. That was my first time hatching anything.

Has anyone tried leaving their broody hen with the flock? I would be worried that the other birds might kill the little chicks. I'd love to hear!

Hi Fuffy!

...well with my 19 years of existence in this world and and 12 years of hobby of chickens...I started all from natural ways in caring my chickens and up to now. Well you dont have to wory that much if you leave your new mother chicken with her cute-fluffy-cuddly chicks..

..because mother hens defend their chicks anytime, anywhere and from anything...they get so aggressive as they had their hatchlings. they will not move for long distances within 1-3days *they are looking after their chicks activity or energy of mobility* and as soon as the chicks go more active, they will "rule" the place...but the only things you need to consider is to keep any very aggressive males away because they can still dominate the mother hen and peck the little tiny ones even with her protection. when they meet other big chickens that they usually peck, the mother hen will immediately leave her chicks and run to that chickens to threaten or beat them.

I agree with Jude--this has been my experience, too. I have one very large rooster who is wonderful with the chicks. He even shares food with them. He's nicer than some of the hens. I've had three broodies raising chicks this year without a problem. The mamas know how to protect and defend. Right now I have seven juveniles and 9 tiny babies and I see the two mamas teaching the juvies their place very effectively. They work it out.

I am so annoyed. Remember my broody who has just give up her chicks 2 weeks ago? And just laid me one egg since? Well she is back broody again and her sister who has showed no desire to go broody before has joined her. I really can't be bothered with chicks but i don't want to break them either, so i will just give them 2 eggs each. I am not 100% sure they are broody but i will be shocked if they aren't. They both had a broody poop, both puff up and growl at me when i put my hand towards them and oth attacked my hand. So are they? So thats what you get for leaving your hens for ONE day by themselves. The Orpington who recently hatched out was in the middle of the floor, so i move her to the corner and her sister is in her old nest.

Sorry Jonn. I can't quit laughing..........................so glad you still have your fingers................... Sure looks like broody little chicken faces to me..........
Cracks me up, we work so hard to learn about our feathered friends and they don't care. About the time I think I know something, they decide to let me know they are still in control of the chicken coop.
Beauties for sure..........................

So, I just went out and candled my broodies eggs. Of five, three had noticeable airsacks, one was dark and another was smelly. I tossed the smelly one and kept the others. I'm not sure if the dark one was just too hard to see through or if there was a problem. It didn't stink. I'm hoping to post some pictures next Sunday or Monday of some cute little fluffy faces :) today we finished day 14.
