Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

I've been taking her eggs away, cause I need them for my auctions..I think she might set on them if I had her in a pen by herself. But I don't have a place for her right now.

I might be able to move her in the Serama brooder, that's the only place I can think of at the moment.

My hatch is due this weekend too ! Last night I candles the eggs ..... it was day 19 ..could see a dark fullness in the egg, with an air pocket !!! there are 2 that are clear ...
I am wondering if Broody #1 hatches and Boody #2 hears/sees them , if she will think they are hers ? Will she get off HER eggs ??!! hmm... nature is so amazing !!!

Miz Mary

I dont know if she will think they are hers or nor, a good possibility. If Broody #2 has fertile eggs under her there is a good chance she might leave her eggs and they will get to cool. Make sure she stays on her babies.

:rolleyes:Is there a way to make sure she stays on her babies ???? when I tried taking her to a new nest , she got off the eggs and made her way back to this spot !! Maybe I will try locking her up in a cat carrier, ( with food /water of course ) where she is now ??? I have learned so much .....

Some hens will leave if some of their eggs hatch and they will get off the nest with the first few, i imagine it would be the same if you had to broody hens in the same place that one might own the others and leave her eggs. I think i would put her by herself. That what I did. Do whatever you are going to do well after dark. Then they dont get so confused and are more liley to be less stressed and nervous.

When I finish feeding I'll see if she's on the nest..and I'll let her keep all the eggs she is setting on...if she can fit them under her anyway.

She will be much more likely to stay on the nest if she has eggs.

I let her keep the egg she was setting on this morning. I don't know if she is still there or not? I haven't gone back out there, it's almost 100 outside and I'm sooo hot!!!
