Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

I love this thread. It makes me so happy!!!!!!
I was worried about having to spend upwards of three hundred dollars for an incubator and was lucky to find a little OEGB that is really broody. I am going to pick her up tomorrow. I'll post pics of her tomorrow as well....hopefully.

But I have has a BA go broody and she was the best mommy. I had nine eggs under her and five hatched!! Ants got to the newborns and only two ended up surviving. :(
She's been a really good mother to the little "mutts" ;).

This is her off the nest.

Mama Marans with her babies enjoying the sun before the storm rolls in tomorrow. She ended up with 3 Marans, and a blue ameracauna and our two co-parenting silkies ended up with 2 legbars, and 2 ameracaunas. Not bad for the low temps we had! Now.....to let the next two broody girls sit on eggs or not????? Uhhh oh.

What kind of ants did that to your new chicks? Was it regular ants or fireants? I"m so sorry. That is a cute picture. I have BAs that hatch out all my chicks for me, too. They make very good mommas.

They were pyramid ants. More of the regular ants.
It's fine I love my BA she is sooooo sweet to her chicks. Right now I'm trying out an OEGB to see if she will brood for me as well.
The OEGB, I think, will be more inclined to brood more often than the BA.

Oh, I'm enjoying all the pics of Mothers and Babies!!!

I have a Jersey Giant who went broody last year (before I got her two months ago) and a Bantam Cochin Frizzle.
I'm hoping to hatch out LOs in the spring.

A hen who has already hatched chicks generally won't set on any eggs because she has to take care of her babies. They are her first priority.
