Hi all,
I was wondering of I could get some advice.
I have my main coop, with a corner blocked off separately. In this corner is a Broody Hen with one chick which is 1 day old, and five eggs are still under her, which I don't think will hatch. It is only Day 21, but we had some exploding eggs which I believe have ruined the batch.
In the main coop I also have a second Broody Hen, sitting in a high up nest box that only she uses. She is on 10 eggs, and it's only Day 1 for her.
Outside, I have another separate small pen under some trees, which is secure and would comfortably house a Broody and her chicks, but it's only the first week of Spring here and we still get frost on the ground in the mornings. This pen is secure and has a roof, but two sides are open mesh.
My question: Obviously if Broody # 2 holds her course I will eventually have to move her from her favourite nest as it's so high up and would be dangerous to chicks. My aim would be to candle around Day 8 and do it then. But where do I move her to?
I could move Broody #1 outside with her single chick, so that Broody #2 can have the inside pen, but that seems cruel as they will be separated from the flock, and she did her whole Broody session in that spot.
I could put Broody #2 outside with her clutch of eggs, but she was in the outside pen earlier today and panicked so badly she nearly hurt herself trying to fight her way out. Not even the presence of the eggs would calm her.
It seems everyone wants to be in the 'big coop' that they are already used to, but I can't very well take down all the walls and have them all in together can I? My flock consists of only 6 hens, 1 cockerel and 1 tiny Peeper, but one of my BO hens can be quite vicious, and I would fear for Peeper's safety.
Can I pen the 2 Broodies, Peeper, and the unhatched eggs together or will that cause problems too? Both Broodies are RIR's......who would have thought they would go broody, lol
Your advice would be appreciated.
