Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Are you 100% sure the hen staying in the box is laying the eggs or if another hen is getting in there with her----laying then leaving?

I was in there cleaning out and all the birds left but her. There was no egg but by the time I got fresh hay out she was on an egg. She also has some friends that will sit various times but not full time like her.

Looks like Bella's a mam again! It was Bella's mother orp originally sitting, but once I moved Bella into orps house orp started playing up. Not sure of it's because of Bella's arrival or because she was sitting for so long. Orps not been on the eggs for 4 days but refuses to leave the broody shed, so not sure what she's up to. I'm 10000% sure she won't hurt the babies so that's why I'm not forcing her out, she will just steal them if anything. Bella's a bit confused, probably because the eggs have hatched within a week of her being broody and because she probably doesn't remember being with a duck! Was so scared to go up this morning incase anything had happened to the duckling (rat drama), but luckily, the baby was safe! :)

Why can't you protect the duckling.  Seems like a waste of energy if you don't. :th

I don't understand what you mean...

Probably because you said this above   "Was so scared to go up this morning incase anything had happened to the duckling (rat drama), but luckily, the baby was safe!"

My Guess!!

Better read those posts more carefully. She didn't write that, just quoted it. No wonder she is confused.

These pics ar adorable! I can't wait until I can hatch some ducklings!

I had a hen like that, some days she would take her sweet time laying and relaxing on the nest. I thought she had gone broody a couple times. Well, she finally went broody for real. She is a bantam Cochin and just about a year old. I was able to get some fertile bantam Cochin eggs. She sitting on twelve, I hope she gets a few. It's her first time, but there are some strong broody blood lines in that breed! This I'm third broody this year and I have a small flock!

I did and it quoted the wrong post as it has in the past. " I am dying" from all of you so I guess I hit the target group anyway. Maybe you did not read the originals correctly though.

I am in love with the photos though.

I have my lonesome chick back from a neighbours broody. Only cause of the homicidal hen I had. She is a week. Jersey Giant/ Copper Moran cross. Mom's the JG. Right now I can keep these breeds straight but not for long. with out further delay here's chick four and I have a broody
chicken sitting on 4 muscovy duck eggs and one of her own. I will need to be the Mama for those ducklings myself since 2 weeks diff will not
be rational for the hen. I thought since their size maybe similar on hatch day with chick it would be fine but reading such and such on this thread I have my doubts. thanks
