Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Quote:
Okay so if laid on day 29 and that would mean today is day 20, has she been on the egg since she laid it? If you hear something then i would say in the next 24 36 hrs you should have a chick. now leave her alone until you hearing actual peeping then you will know it's hatched. How far are the eggs spaced out? when did she lay the last egg she is sitting on? or are these eggs from other hens?

x2! Many times I have heard a scratching sound from an egg a short time before it pips or peeps. This far along I am always careful to note the position of the egg and not rotate it while listening. I always have assumed the scratching sound is the chick positioning itself to pip. Good luck, and yes today is day 20. The day they sit is day 0.

Thanks stony, glad to see you on here. I feel like it has been so long since I've had any chicks since I have had to chase some of this years chicks/ hens off the broody nest already. How are your chicks doing? have nay new broodys?

I read all the time on here, life has just been crazy this year. No I don't have any new broody's to report. One of this years broody chicks, who is now a beautiful black sumatra hen has been laying eggs in my woodshop. Then she yells at me when she is done! Thankfully I noticed her, and found the eggs in a corner. What a stinky mess that could have been.

My Bouncing Baby Buffy is doing well as a fully fledged member of the grown-up flock

She is managing to keep out of trouble, is getting enough to eat and managing to put herself to bed without too much trouble

Glad to hear your pullet is coming of age Fuffy. I am getting very small eggs from my girls that are laying from this years hatch, and don't think they'll get any bigger, but they still taste yummy.

Let us know when the big day arrives.

lol, I lurk alot on here too, seems like everyone has had a great year of hatching, but I think you broke the record for the amount of chicks hatched by broodys.

We got Opie some girls for him to grow up with and they sure are pretty things, he is starting to recognize that too. He'll be 5 months old on the 2nd of Nov.

I wish they would stay ducklings longer. Now if I want to cuddle I have to be fast, he doesn't like to be fussed over in front of the girls, lol. Are you getting eggs from your new ducks yet, can't remember if you said how old they are. Anyway, with time going by so fast it won't be long before we'll be here again talking about our new broody's for 2012. I am going to try for a frizzle next year since my frizzle hen is going on 4. Have a great fall and winter. This is the time of year I like, we get to finish early in the evening and rest up for next season.

So here's a question for you all:

What are you all planning for next year? ...And why?

I have found a supplier of Blue Laying Dorking ... quite fancy giving them a try.

And also maybe just a normal Dorking for the really white eggs.

I like a big bird without 'hairy' legs. Big so they can't get over the fence so easily, and naked legs...well just because

And maybe, depending on wheather I try doing two broodies at once, I might have to have a go at a Barnevelder.

So c'mon guys...What are you hatching next year?

Edited coz my typing sucks

yeah, getting duck eggs. I guess we have been for about a month. Lots of small sumatra pullet eggs as well. Yeah, it won't be long, and is something to look forward to in the dead of winter. Broody's!

mu plans are pretty much run by my broody's. Although I would probably like to slip a few more Sumatra/black Austrolop eggs under a broody. I have a roo and a hen with that mix, and they are beautiful.
