Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Well I am not coming down on you at all but my chickens all free range and I haven't lost a chick yet or I say they haven't. But you have to do what you feel is best for your flock. Congrats on the great hatch and hope the others hatch too.

Thanks for your understanding-- We have lost a rooster this week--not sure how. ANd there has been enormous destruction of woodland across the road awaiting 45+ houses. A huge loss to the native wildlife! I've always tried to be understanding of the native creatures, with deer and coyote passing thru on their own trails across our land, but with this extra temptation of chicks, how can I blame them for needing a meal. Best to remove temptation.

We lost one of the JB chicks today.

DH came home to find it dead under the coop ramp. Don't know if it fell or if it was something else. For the second night, but not in a row, mamma went to bed without her chicks. We had to put the two remaining chicks into the coop with her. I found her sitting on an egg laid by a different hen. Is she tired of being a momma and wanting to go back to being broody?? Anyone with a similar experience?

Do you have room in your brooder for momma too? Then you could have both the safety and the added comfort of knowing they are being taken care of even when you can't be there with them? I totally understand you trying to protect them, but if momma raises them it is sooooooo much easier!! I've done it both ways.

Yep first year with broodys I had a cochin bantam lose interest in her chicks right away, I had to literally lock her up with them till they were 3 weeks old and could be on their own. Needless to say I don't let her sit any more. Sorry your lost one,

My broody last year was NOT a good mama. She managed to hatch out 1 chick and abandoned that one before 3 weeks. I can only assume, some girls are not destined to be mamas.

Sorry for your loss.

During the day she follows them all around, but at night it's like she shuts down and can't really be bothered.

My current broody has started that but her "kids" are nine weeks old now so it's time ....

(My WEE tiny frizzle guards the coop door (on the lower roost) all by herself at night. Completely freaks me out but seems to suit my flock just fine!!!)

My husband threw away the calender that I had marked what day my bantam cochin started setting on her eggs, I went to check the date today, and it is gone and already been taken to the dump.

I have no idea when they are going to hatch. What should I do, just keep going and checking on them several times a day every day?
