Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Well our dogs guard our property, but they can't get on the porch anymore. Its been a few years and we only had 1 dog at the time and we had an opossum on our porch. Snakes shouldn't be moving right now. Rats or mice could be getting around I guess? So I will try to get extra wire on it, although we brooded our chicks in October in it, before it got cold while snakes were still moving and had no problems. Not to say that we can't have problems in the future.

Eggs are due to hatch tomorrow or Saturday. I candled today to make sure I didn't have anymore sloshy eggs.. Air sac is good yes? 3 eggs out of 4 have an air sac and the other one has a dark thing in it.

I see no movement in the 3 but other than the air sac the rest of the egg is dark.

If I'm gonna have more barred rocks hatching I'm going to be sad. Seems like every hatch I get a barred rock and it's always a rooster. I want some pizazz.

I had to take one of my broodys off daily. she would run out screaming with her wings all ajar, poop real big eat drink and dust bathe all in about 10 mins or less but at least she got off.

I'm having a problem with my broody and her chick, I'm worried that the chick isn't getting enough to eat or drink

Her chick is a week old and they are in the coop already. The issue is is that whatever food I put down in a small bowl mama broody tries to show her chick how to "forage" by kicking the food all over the floor and she kicks chips into the water. She is a first time mom and I don't think her lone chick is getting enough to eat or drink. What should I do?

well if she kicking it about the chick can still eat it and if you dont think the chick is drinking dip its beak in the water and it will drink if its thirsty

and how are they today??

Nothing has hatched yet.. Oh the barred rocks? Most get sent to freezer camp but we are keeping one since my mom wants more barred rocks.
