X2 put the water and food up off the floor some Thats what I do. then I make a little step for them to get to it but it does help keep the bedding out some.

My momma is doing the same thing-scratches like she is on crack when I feed them- I have had to clean the chips out of the waterer at least 3 times a day until yesterrday when I sat it up on something off the floor-I noticed this morning it's pretty clean. She even would dump teh long feeder and then scrtach it everywhere-- I fixed that too-screwed it to the floor

fixed that for her. I understand her need to teach them to scratch and forage but she took it to another level!!!

Mine are about a month old now and are doing fine-like the other poster said if she scratches it everywhere they will find it.

Alrighty, I'm joining this thread. I have not read all 585 pages, but I'm working on it, from start to finish. Anyway, three of my hens are always broody! So I picked one today, and kept 3 eggs for her to set. I moved her to a smaller coop because I don't have another coop large enough to move the rest of the flock. She was really, really! fussy with me, and I was afraid she wouldn't settle down, but the moment I set the crate with the eggs in there, she went inside and began fussing with the eggs. I've never done this, never hatched any by any means. I'll keep you posted with how she does--and how I do! I just hope I have the patience for this.

I don't know if this will work for you but those small plastic chicke waterers fit nicely in a cool whip tub. it keeps the water above the wood chips. I use them all the time.

Wanted to share a photo of my first broody hen. This is Penelope with her 14 week old babies. Her first batch ever. Three babies and she has been an excellent mother. I can hardley wait for her next eggs.
