Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Good to know that someone else has a silly broody in the winter. Sounds like our mama hen will be hatching chicks around the same time as mine! What is the breed of your broody?
My Brahma has been getting off her nest once a day at around 11am to eat, drink and relieve herself. I have to wait while she does this to put her back in the second coop when she is done because she keeps going back into the main coop to sit on freshly laid eggs

. I would love to hear how your experience goes. And good luck to you as well!

A camera with film can shoot rings around most of the digitials. speed wise. I am waiting till the Digital Single Lens Reflex cameras come down in price so that I can afford one.

Maybe, but with my digital camera I can take literally 10,000 pictures or more and don't have to pay a cent for processing OR film - so I've learned to work around the speed thing!!

Aahh but they have come up with the speed on the DSLRS The slow speed i was refering to is with the little point and shoot cameras. I am seeing shutter speeds with DSLRS that are coming up to the same speed as a full SLR. Four to five shots under a second. I also want to be able to take a blurry picture on occasion. or capture motion in the wings or horses legs..... I am just waiting for the prices to come down.... Sigh.

I have a new broody! My Black Cochin Bantam!! She waited until she had 14 eggs to start setting! Just set last night. But poor thing. Her eggs aren't fertile. I'm searching through all of the chicken ads to find some cheap fertile eggs.

Anyway. Heres a picture of her nest

i use a kodak z950, it is a step down from a dslr, but you have some controls if you want to play with settings, i have had the canon equivalent( but it ate batteries), you could probably find one for not to much- here are a few shots with it-

I will have to check out the Kodack I can only afford about two hundred..... Great pix..... Oooh I have a one legged Guinea. Shes doing fabulously after a racoon removed the whole leg up to the hip. it took her about two weeks to heal and go back out with her buds and about two months to be strong enough to spend most of her time on one foot. Now she hops along with the flock just as fast as the rest. Miss Peggy is a special girl.... LOL.

Hello all! I've been stalking this page for a while, gathering tips! I have a broody silkie sitting on 4 eggs (was 5 but one quit early

)

Yes it's winter but she wanted to sit so I let her!!! SO I went out and candled today and I have an INTERNAL PIP!!! Whoo hoo! It's all I can do to not run out and check. But mama knows best so I'll see in the morning. She's in the main coop (4x8) with 6 other silkies, 2 bantam cochin teenagers, and 4 buff orpingtons. It's a double decker roost and she's underneath so she's pretty safe. I think the chicks will be fine. She's had 2 hatches since I've gotten her. Sweet lady!!

Updates soon!!!!

awww, so she gets along ok...that is awesome! this little girl is named Emily, a modern game hen given to me from a fellow BYCer that rescued her, she lost her leg in a blizzard last year- she is an awesome broody, and when the weather is nice is outside she has a playpen, but i don't leave her out if it goes below 40, and she has her chick zigzag she hatched- they are bonded...
