Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

try pulling off the membrane very slowly maybe using a little warm water to wet it. be careful because there could be bleeding. Hope it's okay.

I have done this a few times with eggs from the bator. once with a broody chick. I use warm water on a paper towel. I wold say the process takes me about 10 to 15 minutes. Re warming the paper towel as needed. once the membrane is good and wet, it pulls off pretty easily.

potential broody # 2 of the year. Gotta grab a flashlight and see if she is still sitting. In the tin shed of course. Crazy girls...

I went to check the baby and it was already gone.

It was Mama's baby. I had only given her one of her eggs. I am not sure if she tried to help it. Half of the shell was removed and her beak was out. I am not sure what happened.

ok, looks like lacy's baby has internally pipped- after it hatches can i sneak it back to the original broody after it hatches?, she already hatched one, baby is now about ten days old...

you could try Robin as long as your there to make sure 10day old doesn't start pecking at the new one.

in case you are wondering..... that's the broody dance! 2 broody Sumatra's. "mama" my darling blue on an unknown amount of eggs, and a black Sumatra sitting on golf balls, and maybe an egg from today. I'll slip her a few tomorrow or friday. Next time I see her get up!

Congrats stony looking forward to hearing good news!!

Sorry to hear that happened. You have two choices - neither without a price or risk...

You can leave the other egg with her and see if she does the same thing - if she doesn't, then maybe there was something wrong with the first chick or an accident. If she does, then you've learned this is probably not a hen you want to use as a broody, especially with expensive or rare eggs. Mixed breeds maybe if you want to give her another chance.

Or you can bring the other egg inside to hatch in an incubator, prevent any issues with the hen, but then not know the answer to your questions about why it happened, or if your hen is trustworthy.

Good luck with whatever way you choose. If it were me, I would probably go with #1 so I could learn about the hen - something I would want to know long-term and imo worth the risk of the other chick to find out.

I've never bought hatching eggs from someone else nor do I have any intrest with 'rare' breeds. I like to hatch my mutts and pet quality silkies. I added 2 more big eggs under her and the banty cochin egg is peeping! Not pipped, but I heard "peep peep peep" coming from the egg! The chick is gonna be soo small.. I hope it hatches successfully, my silkie rooster seems to give me girls whenever I get eggs to hatch from his ladies. Plus I haven't had any bantam cochin/silkie crosses before. Egg-citing.

Congrats! I am so happy for you Stony!
