Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

My broody brahma jumped over my half door where she was on eggs to my other room and then couldn't get back and the eggs got cold. Almost all of them were developing too. I think I am going to let her try again. How many eggs should I put under her?

I agree with Nimby Chickens.... I remember some time ago, maybe here maybe on another thread, a woman lost her hen to dog attack and I believe she actually threw the eggs out. Then on a whim stuck them in an incubator. All but one hatched.

ARGH! Wish they would get the subscription thing sorted out!

Nothing much to report here:

Spring is thinking about arriving: Nothing but fog and mud..oh and more mud!

Waiting for Hermione to go broody so I can order her some of those pretty blue laying Dorking babbies for this year!

Bouncing Baby Buffy has started laying Beautiful Buffy Eggs. She is now number 2 in the pecking order after her momma, obviously. And she seems to have the sweetest nature. It would be so

easy to teach her to be more pet-like if I wanted to

In the meantime our horse-related season is kicking off: Showjumping this weekend and then 2 weekends of dressage. Then we get into the 'proper' showing, and the working hunter classes. Really looking forward to this season!

Good luck to you all with all your eggs and fuzzy butts!!!!

You still not receiving messages? They fixed it for the most part about the middle of last week. Better check the thread out about it:

I loved dressage when I rode. It was hard work but soo good for both horse and rider. I wanted to do Driven dressage but that just never even got off the ground. Good luck on the showing I know how much hard work it is.

Oh and I have some Welsummer chicks brooding. They are SOOO cute and sooo curious. And Waay different than that mob of Guineas I raised last year.

I don't want to get too excited yet but yesterday I noticed her doing the flowering cabbage dance around the yard and today she is TOTALLY giving me the flat as a pancake "bugger off lady" stink-eye from the nest box. She is the most WONDERFUL broody mama. Could I be so lucky ....

Stay tuned ....

Yeppie BG sounds like it's for real. One of my lil hens from last year came in the coop today when i was cleaning and screamed bloody murder when i got close to the nest box that had 3 eggs in it, so we'll see when i go to lock everyone up if she is sitting on them, but of course it is the fav. nest box.

Unfortunately I cracked and opened the eggs to check for fertillity and development because I thought being cold over night they would have been dead. Most had viens. I'm gonna try again soon.

I just closed everyone up for the night and my lil hen is still on the eggs so tomorrow if she stays I'll have to move her because she is in the most used nest of course. so far 3 eggs under her.
