Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Well, we are just about to rehome 2 roosters we've had since hatching them (33 week old White Leghorn & 20 week old Lavender Orpington) because we don't have the room/pullets. I currently have 8 pullets (including Smokey) in the coop and 3 roosters. We're keeping the Silkie rooster for now only because my daughter can't bear to part with Daisy.

I have two 4 week old EE/WL mixed chicks in my brooder - they were hatched from eggs from the EE Bandit that died around New Years. Chances are good one of those two is a rooster based on behavior/comb size - but time will tell.

So if one of these Welsummers is a rooster - we will keep him and rehome any other roosters that were hatched - they make beautiful roosters :)

My girl got off for the first time today and took about a 5 minute dust bath and the ate all she could for another 5 minutes then she chased everyone far away from the ladder leading up to the nest and flew up and sat right back down. I am trying not to expect much since its her first time but its hard not to!

Oh gosh dont tempt me on the ducklings! I went to TSC today and came so close to buying some. Would you be willing to ship? I dont know how much space two ducklings would need let alone the type of housing...

I don't think I'd want to try shipping. But Charlotte is about 21/2 hrs from us. But if you can get what you want at TSC then that would be better. Best thing to do is read up on how to raise ducklings I can find some great links for you if your really interested.

I have 2 lavender Orps hens that would probably love to have your Lav. roo as a dh. lol
and a silkie roo named Daisy, someone was hoping for a girl. lol

HAHA - Francis is rather frisky and rough with the ladies - but he's sweet. He's going to live with a friend of ours who needs roosters to eat bugs on his property. We will miss Francis - that is if I do in fact send him away. I keep vacillating on the matter.

Clearly you can see my dilemma. He's too handsome to become fox food, which is what happened to two of the three roosters we gave to our friend previously. But he's at the raging hormone age and causing problems by mating girls in front of the lead rooster. I'm having a hard time letting go of him for some reason. DH said just take my time with the decision so that's what I'm doing for now. I so wish we had more acreage, I'd definitely keep him and a lot more chickens. :)
