Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

My broodys hatch day is the 17th too... a couple of days before hatch they will not leave the nest may not even get up too eat, but they know what they are doing so don't worry.  I have been getting my broody out about every third day and she so far hasn't pooped in her nest.  Just leave her alone and she'll take care of everything. Congrats and we'll be talking alot i have a feeling come end of next week... :D

That's awesome that they are all due on the same day! I will be on here sharing everything that is happening that day, I'm sure :p

Jakrat, I know what you mean about the bell! When my hen was broody I had to get her some chicks and substitute them for the fake eggs, golf balls etc. And I brought her and the two remaining chicks in after one chick perished by getting out of her poorly chosen nest box. I worried terribly about her not pooping, so once a day I would pick her up and take her outside, put her down. She would poop copiously, then I would bring her right back and she would gather her distressed chicks. I could practically hear her saying "Its ok now, here I am..."

She sounds like she was a great mom! My little broody whos sitting now, I have no idea how she is doing it. She has not been off that nest (to my knowledge) in 3 or 4 days. I am trying to let her do everything and now mess with her because I know she knows better than me. But she has yet to poop anything bad in her nest.... knock on wood...

Bummer. Sounds like I'll just have to read about the hatches on Sunday since I'm running a 10k next Saturday. Hope your hatches all go well and lots of fuzzy butt pictures are posted!

Yeah I am equally worried about mine, but she does eat and drink when I am not there. I noticed her food went down a bit last night. I have her in the house so it is much easier to monitor her. I do however feed her out of my hand sometimes like last night when she was trying to reach her food but didnt want to get off her nest. I also hold her water bowl near here to make sure that she doesnt get dehydrated. I know that she knows best, but I am a bit sensitive since I lost my little hen last week.
