Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

HAHA! I know what you mean about kids - mine wanted me to buy ducks when we were at TSC. They insisted we have a pond big enough for them. Our "pond" is a 8'x4' 3' deep septic tank form with about 40 goldfish in it. LOL!
well, I went to my local hatchery, and was pleasently surprised. She had black australorpes and buff brahmas!! So I got a couple of those, plus some RIR, 2 pekin ducks (kids were w/me) and 2 polish, (again, kids w/me). ;-) I'm excited to see whether I got hens/roos with the BA and BB! They're supposed to make great broody's and mammas!! She was out of the BLR wyandottes, but that's okay. If I don't check myslef, I could have left there w/a whole lot more, but I have limited space, which is probably a good thing. ;-)

I think a couple people owe us photos

Countygirl--what about feed stores, tractor supply, ect? Our local feed store doesn't have a limit. TSC has a 6 chick minimum, but they get in a good variety...

There ins't one near me, but I'm going to look into shipping. I went to my local hatchery yest. and was pleasently surprised to find black australorpes and buff brahmas, so I got a few of those, and some RIR and 2 pekin ducks (kids were w/me) and 2 polish (again, kids w/me). :) So we'll se what I get w/those. Luckily, for my hubby, we have a small coop, so I'm limited right now, but in a few years, when we have money and time, we're gonna build a bigger coop with a much larger run and then the smaller coop will be for broody hens! Can't wait, but enjoying the journey so far! thanks for all the advice though. Glad to know there are places to go. Maybe in the future, I'll have a seperate area for silkies and sell them, since no one around here does.

Miss Lydia - When should I stop bugging Janet/candelling? Is it like incubation, and I should not bug her for 3 days before the hatch? This would be the first day I will leave her be. Candled last night, and there was hardly any room left in the eggs. I'm getting antsy! :p
