Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Miss Lydia:
Yes, I have fake (granite) eggs. They seem determined so maybe... it would sure be a nice way to add them to the existing flocks.

Looking forward to hearing a good report with pics..

We have a pip confirmation!

The polish egg does indeed have a little pip and is chirping!

Now if only the seramas would hurry on up geez

Ok everyone. I am trying to get this stray rooster in my pen! I finally broke down! The thing that made me crack was the fertile eggs! I want babies!!!

So hopefully he will find his way into the pen I locked the girls up and opened to run door..... maybe he will be smart enough to find his way in.

I know this isnt broody hen related but you guys seem like experts will that rooster terrify my hens? They have never had an roo make "contact" with them.

Will he be over the top? I dont want to hurt/scare them....

you'll never know about this roo till he is with your girls, but they will probably take to him pretty quick, sometimes it looks like they are being rough when actually they aren't, now if he starts tearing feathers out and scalping them then you may want to reconsider. But both of our roos are very good to their girls. And it will help your desire to have more chicks

Their might be a fight at first. I didn't have a roo with my girls till this year. I got him as a 4 month old. The girls where beating him up. So I kept him in a chicken tractor till he was about 6 months old. I let him loose and he let them know he was the boss. It sounded awful. He would grab them by the neck and hold them down till they stopped fighting. Then he let them go. He didn't mount them. He was just letting them know he was there. After the first day all the girls hung around him and he would call them to food and has been a great protector and provider for them. And any time a new girl is put in he does the same thing. They have a pecking order and he also breaks up any fights between the girls. Such drama in the yard. But if he is aggressive more than just a day or two I would kick him out. Too many roosters out there that would love to be in your pen lol. Also have to think about since he isn't yours he might be a carrier of some cooties. So as soon as you can catch him and check him out de-worm and maybe dust him for mites/lice the fun stuff. I'm just saying Good luck.

Oh My Gosh! Atomic Ranch my game hen does the same thing. She doesnt just get off her nest she flies off of it squaking, goes to get a drink and a quick bite and keeps ruffling her feathers and shaking off. She does seem ticked off. I wonder why they do that?
Huh. Interesting! I did buy an incubator in the event that she loses interest, etc. and the eggs are still viable. She was out and about in the run today, briefly, doing this... stomping.... restless.... thing. Shaking her feathers out, seeming generally ticked-off. Then she returned to her usual nest box. I'll use the flashlight tomorrow night (figure they need a break) and see if anyone is still home
