Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Ugh, the rooster got back in the coop today during laying time. Luckily Henrietta had just came off the nest (which was surprising) when I went out there. He flew up on the perch at her before I got in there and she jumped in one of the other nest boxes. I kicked his butt outside and hes still there. Shes back on her nest and My little white EE is acting broody and my BO was walking around all fluffed up clucking.

I may have no eggs left in the bator if all these girls decide to brood!

My little EE always acts like that but my BO is sitting outside the nest waiting on my EE to come out of "her" nest box! She refuses to go in to the other free one.

She is literally sitting there waiting on her. Lets hope when my EE gets up Elly will go in and get down to business. Elly May (BO ) has already layed today by the way!

So cute! Thanks for updating us - your broody must be quite proud of herself :)

Ah, I see you get the Daytime Chicken Soap Drama station as well. LOL! These chickens keep me on my toes and quite entertained. I am glad that mean old rooster didn't get to your broody again. More broodies! Yeah!

Between rainstorms I let everyone out to free range for awhile and a flock of blackbirds made my silkie roo upset so he in turn started chasing all the young roosters around. He hustles it as fast as he can run - I'm sure he thinks he's tough, but he only manages to look like a puff ball rolling along the ground. I guess he's intimidating enough because the poor little Wellies and WL/EE roo were rushing here and there and trying their best to get away from him. He finally gave up that chase and walked up behind one of the unsuspecting Lavender Orp girls and - well she wasn't happy about getting mated. He settled down after that.

My rooster peppy doesn't like broodys either, he thinks he has to go after them but so far hasn't attacked one. Sounds like you may have broodys standing in line for chicks.

It really is a soap Drama! Turns out my RIR must lay lighter eggs now because when I got home Elly May gave in and had layed in the nest box beside the one she wanted. When I got home they were both dust bathing!

Oh well. Henrietta is flat as a pancake on her eggs and I think her eggs may hatch before my bator eggs. I think Broody hens run alot warmer then my bator....

They must because my last 2 hatches were 2 days early.

Well Im not complaining as long as the old wifes tale isnt true that the hotter the temps the more boys your get. If thats true Gracie ran really hot because all 3 of hers were boys... I cant wait to see how many of Henriettas pop out to be boys or girls. (Or lets hope some hatch) With all these distractions between the rooster weather changes Im surprised we still have growing babies but all the eggs but one were moving around in there last night.
