Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Miss Lydia! You are really brave!! I don't think I could muster the courage!! Kare
It's amazing what you can do when the snake is right where 2 broody ducks are sitting and one has just hatched at duckling.

But of course after seeing how pinched up my hands are from mama duck this morning maybe Big Blackie wouldn't have messed them anyway..

Tripp if you have illness I'd get Heneritta as far as possible away from it. I'd even put a small amt of antibiotic in her drinking water. Do you have oxine ah you can literally spray your flock with it it is awesome stuff. I had to order mine but if you live pretty close to Charlotte you may be able to find it locally. Do you have another dog crate and a back porch away from the rest of the flock? Here is a link to the info: http://www.shagbarkbantams.com/oxine.htm
Well I went and got Tylan 50 to give to all the sick birds. I have heard that it works pretty good.

Im not supposed to give them it but 5 days but some people say it clears it up in 3.

I need to find that Oxine stuff. I have been trying to find some stuff to completely clean the coop. This seems perfect! I love the article. It sounds just like how mine are now.

I just hope the Lord is gracious is heals them with this Tylan!

Nobody is in with Henrietta except at night. I already have Duramycin in her water to hopefully fight anything off. We will see. Her chicks arent due until Sunday though.

Ok, so I got my eggs and am ready to swap in the morning during the feeding routine. It seems to be the only time I can get broody off her nest. My other broody stopped so all 12 will have to go under her. Is that too many? Also, any other sugggestions before or during my broody acclimation? I'm going to mark them with pencil and continue to try to remove the fresh unfertile eggs daily. I also cut back on the girls in that coop so it won't be as bustling. These eggs were shipped, and it did take three days. Is this a problem?

Thanks!

What breed is she? LF can probably handle 12 smaller breeds may have a time covering 12. As far as shipped eggs I have never done it but your suppose to let them rest on the counter 24 hrs before putting under broody. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Ok, maybe I can let them rest until Sat am? Do they need to be warm? Left in the box?

The broody that has been reliable is a Red Star (TSC special ;-)) LF. My bantam cochin stopped brooding even though I left separate nests with eggs in them. Not sure if she got tired of sharing her nest! Or sat too long?

i always put my shipped eggs in an egg carton, pointy side down in a cool place, and let sit 24 hours-

The adoption seems to have worked. Yesterday I gave the hen some more water and she drank well and did not bite me once, the chicks drank also, I sprinkled additional chick starter along the edge of the nest and the hen ate as well, however she did peck at the chicks a few times, they did not scream or act hurt, I think she wanted them to hide from the monster (me) ..this am I could hear happy peeps and cooing that stopped as soon as I looked in with mama glaring at me..still have some clean water and food...OK bye. It seems she has alot to teach these little ones, well, better her than me!

I love your comment, better her than me!.
