Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

My silky cross has gone broody again! I've put a few eggs under her, though I was a little picky this time and tried to get an egg from each of my hens-hopefully they'll all hatch! Her last set of babies aren't even fully grown yet, but I don't think she's likes them much when they're older. She just likes having baby chicks xD

That's a silky for you! My silky Topsy's last clutch turned 7 weeks old yesterday and she is laying in the corner of the coop right now - I braved the downpour to open the coop and saw her. I'm praying she's just laying and not trying to start another clutch. But she was doing the characteristic cover herself with straw bit so no one will see her laying there with her eggs.

Congrats on the broody!

Congrats to you Both. looking forward to seeing chicks especially on a day like today with bone chilling winds and snow.

I am so excited! I think one of my chickens has gone broody. Should I be excited or should I break her out of it because it is winter and not a good time to raise chicks? how long do I have to decide? should I bring her into the basement and have her raise chicks there? oh, the quandry!

My game hen hatched this past summer was on 2 eggs today, I took them only because it is freezing here, and to me[only] not the time of year I want mama and babies outside. she'll get another chance in the spring.

Had a stoat attack tonight, luckily The mother orp and the chicks got away but the one who got caught put up a good fight and i managed to save her. heres a link there is a pic of her after https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/731086/just-had-a-stoat-attack

I'd never heard the term: stoat before either! Had to look it up on google.

The stoat, also known as the ermine or short-tailed weasel, is a species of Mustelidae native to Eurasia and North America, distinguished from the least weasel by its larger size and longer tail with a prominent black tip.
