Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

I did the deed. Me being nosy as i am, i had to break it open. I saw the veins and the dark spot. but the yolk was very runny. Did I just kill my chick?? If so, I am gonna feel really bad!!!!!

:frow We're all excited for you too, Debs55!  Good luck and have fun! My Sizzle, Janice, just hatched 4 mixed eggs this past weekend. I think we have 3 barred rocks & 1 EE. Time will tell. :pop

I'm so excited to candle and see the little veins. Theses eggs are also from my flock so it's even more exciting! And Lolablue that picture is adorable!

No you didn't kill it. It was probably already bad and that's why she pecked it. Don't ask me how they know, they just know.

The other thing I forgot to mention is I do not open the unhatched eggs. I've done it in the past and every time I've just confirmed that I should have simply tossed the egg. An unhatched egg might give you info as to humidity or temperature errors, and that is helpful if you use a bator, but I don't consider that info needed for the broody.

Day 26 Momma is still on that egg. Should I pull it?

She did leave the nest this morning to go out to the pen. All the babies stood at the top of the ramp & peeped at her. They were so cute!!

I'd take it and candle it in the dark. If it were still growing she probably wouldn't have left it. I WOULD NOT OPEN IT. Just saying.
