Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Hey Johnn I caught Vanilla Ice sitting in the nest box today. She was warming a ping pong ball lol

The big question is what color egg will she lay!

 I went out to check on the pullets tonight. Yup. found the huge broody poops...and the rooster in the nestbox with the 2 girls!! Now this X-large nestbox barely fits the 2 girls. Now he is in it too! What do I do? I asked him 3 times if he really wanted to be there smile, while I was adding more feed.  When I left, he had climbed out  to see what was going on.  There are 4 inch feathers scattered around the coop. I wonder if they are his or the girls?

Personally I would leave them alone. They can and will separate themselves if they feel it is necessary. I've had shared best box situations and the only eggs that got crushed were the ones that weren't going to hatch anyway. Let them stay warm together and co raise the chicks. He will not be mating them and there aren't going to be new eggs added because broodies don't lay when they are sitting. Leave them to their own choice and you will be happier in the end. Separate them and you will create a pecking order issue later.

Is his way or approching me agressive?, he also does the mating dance around my leg. My oprington has done such a bad job shes braught her chicks up to be agressive, Bella is always fighting, The mother beats hens up and Bella joins in. Not sure if i want her to go broody again if this is her idea of raising chicks!

i just nudge him with my foot when he does that, also his dads still above him so hes going to have to win the girls off him because none of them respect Asparagus!
