Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

After hearing about everyone's roosters, I guess I'm really lucky! (knock on wood). My Silkie roo, Marshall, is very sweet.

He'll sit on your lap and snuggle right down. DH, DD & my sister all have picked him up without any fuss. He's only flown at one of the dogs when she came into the chicken's room of the coop. I was little worried tonight though. One of the chicks had some poo stuck to it's butt not blocking the butt but close enough. I had my back to the roost where everyone was getting ready for bed, holding the squawking chick and using a wet papertowel on it's butt. I heard Marshall behind me give his (what we call his Velociraptor) call.

I was just waiting to feel him on my back but he didn't. He's such a good boy!

No need to rub it in! ;)

Bobbiechicks, if (if why say if?! we all know she will) Topsy goes broody again you need to put a Vanilla Ice egg under her!

I caught ms Broody off the nest today. The funny thing is one of the other hens got on the nest till she was ready to go back. I felt privileged in seeing that

That's nice. My broody was on her own when she got off the nest. No one else sat on her eggs. Maybe she threw a fit with them that I didn't see. But she didn't seem to mind her sister hopping in the nest shortly after the chicks were born.

Thanks for the info fisherlady! I'll be watching them. There's 2 w/the BR spot on their heads. The all black one confuses me. I read that BR's come from Dominques & PR's. So I looked at pics of the Dominque chicks, some had all black heads. My eggs were from EE's, BR's & WPR's. The roo was a BR cross just not sure what the cross was.
Here are our chicks for reference...

The barring is now obvious on the little rocks... the australorps have the yellow chests and masking...
If yours are mixed, then the differences will probably not be quite as obvious.

Lovely, e+ (wildtype..stripe on skull), not eb (brown...brown helmet). There is another gene going on there too because the sides of the stripe are serrated, not straight. Plus the dorsal stripe is in two pieces instead of being a continious stripe from tail to top of head. Still, I think this will be a real pretty chicken.
Best,
Karen
