Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

I just set 12 eggs under my broody Columbian Wyanndotte. First time for us both. She's been broody for over a month and I tried to break her, but she is stubborn, so I decided to put her to work.

Good luck my Mary has been broody since right after christmas also tried to break her. Just put 8 eggs under her on Thursday night. Her first & my first also. So far so good.

I'm a second timer with a broody. Just set (due 4-5) a dozen under my big Austra White (white leghorn x black australorp). She was broody every month last year and she is starting early this year so she will be my working mom this year. Gotta make those hens earn their keep somehow!
She is hatching some mixed breed (EEs) babies out of my own flock. :weee

So is this her first hatch then? Or did you use her last year to? How did she do her first time?

I can see some of the eggs poking out around our girl, does that matter? LOL I'm so nervous. Can you tell?

I used a black sexlink last year. She did awesome and even raised in the ranks of the flock because she was so fearless about protecting her chicks. I didn't use my current broody then because she is quite vocal about letting me know those eggs are HERS. I was only going to give her a few eggs but a couple of the eggs are smaller so I actually squeezed 13 under her and none poke out. She is one of my larger hens too. So far she is doing a good job. She is in a large dog kennel and i boot her off once a day. The kennel has to stay shut because all the hens want to lay in her box. She was sitting on 18 eggs one night.

Here is last years chicks:

I was super nervous about my first broody hatch but I'm so much more relaxed and excited this time around.
