Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Hatched yesterday and hopefully a few more hatching today...
I will stop worrying..

How old are the chicks? The mother will probablies take tem out the nest when they are 3 days old, so if I was you I would just remove it when the chicks are 3 days old. Congrats on the chicks by the way!

my chicken got off her nest yesterday to go on another, when I got home her eggs were cold, does this mean there bad now? also I have another broody and would like to throw some eggs under her, and im off tomorrow to get some, but... do i need to to tell them to put them in the carton small end up or large end up? should i tell them not to refridgerate them? but leave them out for me so there not cold ? thanks for all the great help this thread provides.

It really depends how long they were left cold, they could still hatch but the hatch might be delayed. As for the eggs you plan to get, they should be placed point down in the carton also people say you shouldn't refrigerate hatching eggs, so you should ask them to keep them out the fridge.

oh my goodness, six days after my broody basque got started with a nest full of 10 eggs, now a second one, a silver-penciled plymouth rock, is showing all the signs in the nest box next door -- fluffs up & pecks at my hand if i investigate, and has pulled a bunch of her underside feathers out.

two broodies, a week apart!! now i have to decide whether to hatch some of my girls' own mutt eggs (SFH x various breeds), or get some new ones for her to sit on...!

I have two in full broody, setting on eggs, and I have 2 more showing signs of broodiness. And I have 8 chickens! Yikes , I'm going to buy fertile eggs this tomorrow for the other two and the one broody who is setting on infertile eggs. we wanted to be sure she was fertile, yep so tomorrow she will get fertile eggs. I'm going to have lots of chicks !

So excited I found this thread! I've had a broody buff minorca for over a month. I tried to break her for almost two weeks, but I finally relented and let her keep some eggs. They are due to hatch any day now and tonight when I went to lock them up I found another buff minorca in a nest box. Lots of brooding for a non-broody breed!
