Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

watching my moved broody from afar this morning, she spent the night in her new nesting box on her eggs, but so far this morning (over about 40-45 min or so) she's just pecking around in her pen, probably wondering why she's in jail, but not settled on her eggs. i'll leave her in there all day while i'm at work, but wondering, does it often take them a day or two after being relocated to settle in? will the eggs be okay?

This hen is really starting to annoy me now!, she got off and when she went back on the eggs one wasn't under properly and was cold. I tried to shove it under but she got really angry so I don't know if she has put it under properly or not now!

If she leaves them for too long they could die. When I moved mine they settled straight away so I don't really know. Let us know if she is sitting or not when you return home from work!

Well after starting with 8 eggs only one hatched. On Monday (day 23) I saw a broken shell but no chick and she had moved the whole nest into the corner of the coop. I tried to look under mama and saw two eggs so I decided to leave her be and wait till day 25 before messing with her. Well yesterday I come home from work and mama is out in the pin sunbathing so I thought she abandoned the nest and most likely none of the eggs were viable so I went to collect the eggs two where whole still but cold and one was half hatched with a dead chick inside. We went over to check on the broody and a little black chick popped out. It must have hatched on Monday and then after the other one didn't hatch she took this chick outside. She seemed very comfortable around the rest of the flock. She wouldn't let just anyone eat with her and the new baby but she had no problem with the rooster being around the chick. One of my RIR's was checking out the new chick and the broody gave her a death look and the RIR decided she had seen enough.

My babies are 2 weeks old today!!

Congrats to all the hatched chicks! I love watching the moms with the little ones.

I've decided to buy some RIR day olds from a local source for about $4/each. They should arrive around 4/29. I'll put the six day olds under her and see what happens. I'm tired of trying to break her and I don't mind going another two weeks for a sure thing versus three weeks and she doesn't hatch any chicks.
