Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Ok, its officially day 20. Wish me luck! I really, really need it! Lets hope I get adleast one . I'm using my own eggs again and the last 80 I put under broodies of my own didn't hatch.

So I went to check on my birds and make sure everyone was tucked in for the night, and the broody was off her nest, and her interim eggs were cold! Up on the roost with everyone else. She's been sitting perfectly for over a week. Of course my eggs for her arrived today, and were supposed to go under her tomorrow I didn't do anything with the coop except change the bedding, and there haven't been any changes in the flock. Does anyone have any tips to get her back on the nest? Otherwise I'm about to be stuck with 24 more eggs, ugh.

We have a Buff Wyandotte bantam hen that just would not quite with this broody idea. I gave up and set her with Splash/Black orpington large fowl eggs. Expecting 100% Blue Orpingtons! She is due in about 2 1/2 weeks.

Someone asked a question about this photo. She is a Buff Wyandotte bantam with extremely bleached out yellow shanks and feet from laying. the photo was taken at the end of her year of lay, just before the molt. If you have a hen similar with white shanks and feet, I would say it is a Buff Orpington.

How many candle the eggs under their broody hens? We use a 9 LED light small flashliight to candle all of our eggs. So tonight i slipped this gal off teh enst and candled. Most seemed fertile, but difficult at this early of a setting. Will check again in a week and toss any clear eggs. No use her working on eggs that are duds.

If the eggs hatch it should be tomorrow or Saturday, can not wait. She will be the second mama in 2 weeks. My leghorn chicks are awesome! And now this mixture of chicks coming, I can not wait. I will post pictures when all things are settled and babies are born.

My broody is a thief, she stole the babies from the other nest. I don't quite know how she moved them across but she did. This is her teaching them to eat chick starter.

Your broody will do just fine, she knows what to do by instinct. In the picture above is my broody with her 8 little muttletts.

Its official...

I have three broodies!!! Two set on Monday and one more today! Came home late was collecting eggs and my (only) buff orpington pecked me and growled. She is on maybe 10-12 eggs? Everything set in that pen today... I am not complaining

Your broody will do just fine, she knows what to do by instinct. In the picture above is my broody with her 8 little muttletts. 

I know she probably will...but she's never been a mommy!She not even a year old yet!but we don't have a real coop yet,so she's in a big box with a lid in the basement,with a little nest box.Won't I have to get her up to eat,drink,poop etc?? I've never had any experience with this,so any assurance/help appreciated!!oh,and I've never seen her turn the eggs,is she doing it???
