Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Here is a great photo from the internet showing a Rooster baby sitting ???/many chicks! I love this photo. My own rooster never harmed the chicks. He would hang out with them a lot, too.

What breed do you think that roo is? That is just an adorable picture! My roo doesn't babysit, but he protects the chicks just like the hens. If I go in to grab one, he gets all bent out of shape.

Generally, will roosters attack baby chicks? My roosters are relatively docile and have never tried to attack me. While they do not enjoy me holding them, they also will submit once they are in my arms. All of them are relatively dominate: they fight on occasion over who is alpha but I can always step into stop them without a problem. Do you think these roosters would be likely to attack my chicks? Thanks

I had a White Leghorn rooster pick up a day old Wellie and fling it. The Wellie was fine but screech bloody murder. The broody went berserk and attacked that rooster and several innocent by standers. No one messed with those chicks again.

I've not had another rooster since that guy mess with any of the chicks.

Vanilla Ice and Shirley Jones are both broody! Vanilla was hatched by Topsy, but she wasn't her own chick. She is part Silky, part White Leghorn, and part Aruacana. Shirley is all Silky & Topsy's next generation & one of the chicks that Vanilla cohatched with Topsy. They look so cute all puffed up big with their feathers stuck way out there. Too bad I don't need more chicks.

He is a cochin bantam seems like to me. My cochin bantam is sitting on 8 eggs of her own. They are due in two weeks. I also have a full incubator.

I have a broody FBCM who is setting 12 eggs....all mutts from my Lavender Orpington. This is my first time incubating, and we are on Day 6+ I candled tonight, and found that 10 of 12 appear viable. Only 4/12 are FBCM eggs, and 2 of them are the ones that I am unsure about. The neat thing was that I saw 3 of the embryos move!! It is so exciting....Mama is doing a good job. She tried to take some of the eggs away from me before I could get them candled, though. I took six away one at a time to candle, then took the other six away all at once. Before I could get the first 6 back under her, she was up, trying to get the others back. She settled when I set her back on the first 6, then put the other six back one at a time. If her devotion to the eggs continue, I think she is going to be a good Mom.

You should just let them hatch one each!
