Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Coyotesmommy, it is sad to see that baby chick.

I have now 3 baby chicks with that hen, they may be the ones she was sittingfor 2 days before we makw the "maternity coops", since i did not had the hearth to take them away. We checked yestreday and there were only 6 eggs not seven, and I am sure i can count.
My other hen has not hatched anything yet, i felt bad this morning when i was handling a baby chick of the other hen, she start like calling.

My hens are doing the sitting, and I am the one that can not wait!

Ditto!

It's so hard to give up control and leave it to the mama's! They pushed two eggs out from under them and it's so hard for me to not put them back in lol. One they pushed all the way onto the floor, but it had a crack in it before so they're just doing their job and the other they cracked completley open for some reasn and there were no insides left... so not sure what happened there.

I have a question! This is my first year hatching. I had 2 broody hens that hatched a total of 15 chicks. I attempted to incy hatch eggs which was disastrous. 1 of 7 hatched, so I purchased 6 flock mates for her. I new have 22 new chicks to go along with my flock of 12. DH built me a new coop! I have another broody hen, and thinking abut getting some.more hatching eggs. What do you guys do with all your chicks?

Also any advice on sexing chicks?

I know I know!! Less than 24 hours & I can't wait!! I swear I heard a peep! I just keep going out there and checking on her, she is like " hey shut the darn door and stop stairing at me"

Th
Not sure why she died.  She was getting up once a day or so and eating and drinking (and having very big poops!).  A few days ago her poop looked runny and she had a hoarse sounding cluck.

If you have a local farmers market, you can sell them there. I've seen everything from chicks to full grown chickens for sale at ours. Or, you can go into a egg selling business

. Then there is always the option that in about 4 months you will have a freezer full of chicken. Those are the only options that I know of for excess chickens unless you have some friends that are dying to start their own flock!
