Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Outside for the first time!, it was only for about 10 mins because the chicks were getting cold, so she lied down to let them under so I thought that was the best chance I was going to get to catch them. I picked her up and one chicks was left on the floor then the other fell out her wing so I quickly scooped them up before they could react.:

Its so much fun to see Life and Nature and the wonders of it all!

So sad! Today I went out to check on my broody buff orp and found her dead! I didn't check on her last night so am not sure how long she has been off the eggs. Trying to figure out how to jury rig an incubator. I brought the 6 fertile eggs inside and have them under a heat lamp (100 degrees F). Hopefully they didn't get too cold! They were to hatch in 5 - 7days.
There is a thread on here called the Austrailian Mystery Egg. The man rigged up an emergency "incubator" using a large glass bowl with a sponge in the bottom and a Lamp over the top. I think he also covered most of the bowl with plastic or something....anyway, look at the thread. He has lots and lots of photos that shows what he did. He hatched that mystery egg! There is also a woman who stuck the eggs under her shirt and they hatched! LOL

I've had multiple broodies at the same time and never ever had one attack another or another's chicks.

My first hatch, but my experience was the same. After the broody took the clutch out of the house (I did lock the flock out of the house for the last few days and 3 days after hatch) there weren't any problems at all. Today (clutch is 18 days old) I was trying to catch the chicks since they were separated from broody (who is not happy if I try to touch her chicks) and even the rooster was raising a ruckus as though I was trying to grab one of his girls. Seems that the flock has accepted them as one of their own.

Generally, will roosters attack baby chicks? My roosters are relatively docile and have never tried to attack me. While they do not enjoy me holding them, they also will submit once they are in my arms. All of them are relatively dominate: they fight on occasion over who is alpha but I can always step into stop them without a problem. Do you think these roosters would be likely to attack my chicks? Thanks

My 8 chicks are 17 days old and they have been in the coop with all of the flock and the roosters do not bother them, neither do the hens or the younger soon to be point of lay pullets. My roosters are calm but I wouldn't call them docile, they challenge me every once in a while, they have to be reminded that I am the alpha not them. They have never hit me they mostly just posture.

My rooster hasn't bothered the chicks. Of course, he tries to mount the broody now that she is available again, but doesn't seem to notice the chicks at all. Like I said earlier, he actually started barking a warning when I was trying to catch the chicks tonight, he seems to look at them as part of his flock to protect.

I have more broodies than I know what to do with right now. Here are two that have decided to raise four chicks together.

In answer to time to put chicks out with flock I send them out on the second day once I'm sure the hen and chicks have a good bond. No one hassles the chicks much least of all the adult Roos. The worst ones are usually half grown chicks...but they face the wrath of momma hen if they step over the line.

I HAVE BABIES! They are 3 days old now. Kagney started the sitting but gave up after 10 days. Luckily, Lacy went broody a few days before that and she finished the job. started with 6 eggs 2 broke, one never started and the other didn't pip. We got two cute little fuzzies so I am happy!
