Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Hope she has a good hatch for you! but I have to ask.... what mix? Looks like an Australorp, silkie and naked neck all fell into a washer and came out looking like this! How big is she?

I was wondering the same thing - but when I read the way you put it - I just rolled with laughter - my children asked me what was wrong - LOL!!

Hey guys. I just discovered ants in my broodys pen and nest. I do have a spot I can move her to but I'm scared that she would abandon her eggs. Opinions?
Maybes when she gets off you could put some ant spray (if that exsists) in the coop and change her nest bedding before she gets back?

I don't think poison will help because she is nesting in a dog house which is on the ground inside a kennel and there are little ant beds on the ground too so I feel like they'll just come back. I'm really not sure what to do

Thank you everyone who helped with advice on mites!! The lil mites seem to have gone!! Hard work but worth it!!

My little chicks are amazing (want to share photos but iPad won't let me)

I left my 2 hens one a bantam silkie and the other a bantam cochin with the flock they did wonderful and all the hens act as mama to the chicks. I don't know if I would have had the same luck if I had a large flock or if I kept roosters. I have 7 hens.

So enjoyed seeing & hearing abut the broody dogs. I had a little Benji type female I got from the dog pound that would watch over my baby chicks-so cute!

Johnn-you are getting really good w/those pictures. The last ones are very lovely. Hope the chickens continue to do well for you.

The digg stories are great. I have golden retriever Autumn, who is fascinated with the chicks. She will lay for hours & watch. My black lab, Wynter, on the other hand slobbers when I show her a chick. She doesn't bother the hens, but don't trust her with the chicks. I have 7 chicks in a brooder, and would love for Autumn to mother them, but just don't trust Winter.
