Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

So I had 9 chicks hatch and one mom was on the floor with her three and mom #2 decided to move her two down and the one attacked her while I was away! She looks so terrible. I cannot believe one hen could do this to another hen. I made them seperate pens now but WOW if I had known they would do that I would have done that in the first place! Is that normal??
I had to help a chick hatch today too that was under a broody, but she hatched inside and seemed to be doing fine so i moved her back under the broody. Sometimes these birds are so frustrating!

Its not fair to compare anything to langshans. They do everything!!!
Also add Langshans

I would assume that either broody 2 got to close to #1's chicks or tried to adopt some in mamas eyesight. Or she just SUPER protective. I don't know how my broody will react in a couple days. The coop she in is a real rainbow of poultry atm w/o many issues. Guess I will find out around Sun-Mon.
Might seperate her and chicks after hatch if I can w/o her freaking on me.

two of my five recent broodies took a sudden and intense dislike to each other, and fought so much (even when separated by a pen) i eventually had to give one of them to a neighbor -- and only after several chicks were killed in the process. i don't think it's "normal," but it does happen...

How adorable these baby chicks look! I'm putting 17 fertile eggs under my broody tomorrow night! I can wait to see them hatch at the end of June.

I only order nine eggs but one of the hatcheries very kindly sent me some to try for her. If you need fertile eggs, Sweet Pea Farms is a wonderful operation and she has frizzled varieties! If you order from her tell Donna McGlasson sent you. Stacy is a great gal and chicken people are so friendly! I'm continually amazed at how nice everyone is to each other.

I'll keep you posted on my hatch. BTW, the way I am set up my broody is blocked off from coming down off her nest so I take her a little while everyday. Is there a good time limit I should follow once the eggs are under her to let her out to stretch and grab a bite????

Loving all the chick photos!

Donna
