Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

We just moved my broody hen an her eggs. We candled all five and they all show large air pockets :) She is super MAD though. I'm concerned that she may stop sitting on them because she is our least friendly hen and had to be caught and then moved. She is currently sitting exactly where we placed her and has not covered the eggs. She acts like she is in shock. Any suggestions?

i cant afford to buy Chicks at The moment but i Do want her to hatch. I just hope she will not get to weak and die. I put food near her and she ate and i gave her water and she drank but did not get off the eggs.

Bunny, a Splash Maran, sat for 46 days after I noticed she was broody. She attempted a clutch that failed after I had attempted to break her. And I finally decided to buy her some chicks at the local feed store. She was fine and healthy. I did give her food such as dried mealworms and scrambled eggs to snack on while she tried to hatch those eggs.

you can smell the fact they are bad very bad. And there was only 4 and all for were very dirty smelled rotten and were very liquidy on the inside.

Good move disposing of those before they exploded or got broken.

By Day 18 the egg should be dark on the inside with a small air sac and large chick ready to pip and zip out in the next couple of days.

You shouldn't have a problem putting another set of eggs under her. Just leave some ping pong balls or golf balls under her until you get the fresh eggs in there.

Remember this hen i got given last year with 15 chicks but then i had to give it to a friend because she was struggling to cover them in the cold?

Well only one chick made it. Some died of infection, other being inbred and 3 in a badger attack. The one that made it was a girl and i have just heard off her owner now to say she has gone broody now! We don't know if her mother is still alive, she is living out in the fields somewere and rarley comes back only on occasion. There has been foxes around so i guess they will find out if she comes back or not, or maybes shes sitting again, who knows! Anyways, here is the little white girl on her eggs:
