Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

I have a little silkie who I put a clutch of eggs under, she is in a separate part of the coop. the clutch I put under her is 8 eggs, so a bit big as she is little. My other silkie hen just went broody and I am thinking to take 3-4 eggs from under one hen to put under the newly broody hen. Would this work? And could I move at night the newly broody hen into the area that is segregated in a nesting box next to the other one?
Move the new broody at night but put fake eggs under her first just in case she is unhappy and gives up. Once she is settled and has sat on the nest for a day or ake the two, then you can take the eggs and put them under her.

Can someone explain to me what eggs a broody hen sits in if she does not lay eggs when she is broody?

She will lay a few three or four fertile eggs before she gets broody Depending on the breed Seems like Silkys think one is enough.... LOL. But often times the whole flock will contribute to a nest of eggs. My last broody had over thirty before I found her in the dogs house. She hatched out six. The rest died as she tried to drag them all under her to warm them a cool one would be tucked in then a warm one would roll out the other side.

Sigh.... lost my whole flock last month wont be doing chickens or Guineas till next spring if that...

I am scared to be too optimistic but I have a cochin sitting on some eggs. One of them is a bonus egg the seller sent me along with my order. It is a peafowl egg. I just candled it and it has little veins! So excited. I am afraid to get to excited in case it doesn't hatch but I would be so thrilled if it did!
