Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Well its day 21 for Rosie and her 6 eggs that I ordered from the Internet. Iv left her to do it all herself and tried my best not to touch them. I candled them at around 10 days but since its mine and her first time im not sure if I done it right. Two of the 6 were a dark dark red and the other 4 looked a nice blood red ( I didnt have long to look as Rosie was getting very grumpy about me touching them) now on day 21 she nipped out for her little 5 minutes outside so I had another look at them and 4 feel like there is something in them and two are defo dud as I moved them and they sound like liquid inside. Even if just one hatches id be very happy and so would Rosie. How many days after day 21 do I leave them with her if nothing happens? Thank you in advance everyone xxx

Two others have pipped!!! but one of the ones that pipped isn't moving around at all :( I am really worried! Is this normal? The other one is shaking the shell all over the place... and I don't feel/see movement in the other

I picked up the chick that hatched earlier today to inspect it and then I set it back down beside its mom, but the broody sitting beside its mom saw the chick and got really excited probably thinking it was hers. So she really quickly tucked the chick under her and started clucking to it. It was really cute and the other mom didnt evrn notice. The girl who stole the chick hadn't hatched out any chicks yet, so I guess thats why she was so excited! My three broodies are basically sharing the four chicks. Its super cute, they wander around the coop from mama to mama.

Has anyone ever hat a mama hen that pecks one of her chicks constantly? Her chick 4 chicks are a week old and in the chick pen. Yesterday she kept on pecking one of her chicks so much the baby would leave her. I took the baby and put it with 9 others I have in a brooder.

*sigh*Day 24 & nothing. Afraid to leave any longer in this heat.
1st egg was watery & black inside. 2nd egg was developed but no feathers.
These were the most expensive eggs I have ever ordered & were English orps.
Out of 6 eggs none hatched. This was an experienced mother, so not her faults.
I don't think the eggs were good. Won't deal with that breeder again. : (

I believe its normal for them to rest. But try not to peek because while they are pipping and zipping they need momma hen to stick tight on lock down to keep the humidity up. Just like in an incubator the last days the eggs are put on lock down you dont open the incubator till they all hatch.
