Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

ark I let my broody take her chicks outside with the other hens, she will protect them. I always return her to the brooder at night, at least for the first 2-3 weeks. Just keep am eye out, but Agger should be able to handlejust a few chicks.
X's 2.and she will cover them if they get a little cold.................
Have fun.=)

I have and Australorp hen who is on day 21! She is a first timer and my question is if she doesn't hatch any chicks should I let her rest for a while or just put more eggs under and let her start over for another 21 days?

today will tell me a lot. Having chickens in the city and watching the number of birds I have is important to me. Hope I get a reply

Be sure to give those eggs enough time. While chicks hatch at 20 or 21 days sometimes, they can take longer. I'd sure give them at least 25 days. Have you candled them? Could you get day old chicks for her if hers don't hatch?

x's 2 for sure.I have had 25 day chicks...........The hen might give you some clues....She will set real tight at this stage of the game.
And possibly leave the nest or kick out the eggs if they are not good............Good Luck and have fun..........

I agree with the others.... also remember consider the first day as day zero. If you put the eggs under her yourself. And No peeking while they hatch. Hens go on lockdown just the same as you would do in an incubator. They have to raise the humidity on the eggs for hatching so the chicks dont get shrinkwrapped.
