White is bright in the shade too... is why we never got another all-white bird... too immediately visible to aerial predators 🙁

Our 1st all-white Leghorn... a real sweetie & kind to the Silkies.

c. 2011 ~ there are 3 birds by the bush/fence... but white Bela shows bright white

The quintessential hen ♥️♥️♥️

Bob says they stay white and bright and clean through magic 😆

I believe it! My white gals will roll in dirt get up, shake and be gleaming white again!

The gap is 1cm or less!
It's still a possibility... chickens are creative inventing new ways to get stuck in things we never thought of. I, for one, feel less worries w/ port feeders. The one we have ~ the chicken doesn't need to stick their head completely inside the port to reach the feed.

@RoyalChick please tell Geronimo! that she's the bestest, most gorgeous girl and I completely agree that you must be a monster for not giving her all of the treats or anything else she wants (sorry, sometimes the truth hurts :p )

The look of her face really reminds me of my Polly parrot. She loves to be up in my face, checking she's not missing out on anything edible, too :love

Polly is so sweet. Brought to mind that our Dana liked wattle rubs & ear rubs as well. She'd close her eyes & go to sleep w/rubs.

For a while one of mine was sticking her head sideways under the flap like she believed there was better food in the hopper than in the food tray.
She never did get her comb stuck but I can see how that could happen.
It also caused too much feed to come down into the feed tray which then got spilled or even interfered with it closing.
Al suggested a blocker to reduce the feed flow down (cardboard inside the hopper) and it also had the effect of frustrating her efforts to reach under.
Eventually she stopped trying so I was able to remove the cardboard.
I'll have to try that. Mine also have mine overflowing with feed so this should help.

Geese are the answer!!!!!

I had a white chicken get taken a few winters ago, by a red tailed hawk, i am surprised because she was invisible against the snow.

W/ Leghorns, one side or the other eye gets obstructed from the huge floppy comb & it worried me too much plus frostbite worry. Legs are such industrious foragers that they have the comb covering an eye all the time w/ their heads down. Just one less breed for me to worry about... not to mention egg laying issues, & getting nastier in older yrs. In our soil, dustbaths made the white feathers look dinjy/yellowy stained till the next moult.

I really loved her but more worries than I needed:

I have visitors. Maybe permanent.
Nacho’s sister from next door, was probably impregnated by Mr. Wyandottey. She had been gone for a while. Today she brought over seven little babies, maybe 4 days old I gave them water and wild bird chick crumbles. Mamasita likes it here with the other 25 birds. She’s teaching them to scratch around, eat and drink. There is a slow one that I don’t think will make it. But mama won’t let me near them. So cute for a nice spring day.View attachment 4309205View attachment 4309206
