Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

I do remember them. It was just about the same time as Smokey and Topsy were broodies. I miss those girls. I gave Topsy to another family who really wanted a silky broody and Smokey died last winter.

So far this morning no chicks, but momma is still on the eggs and I thought I saw a glimpse of a pip, but it didn't hear any chirps. I'll keep checking throughout the day.
I remember you telling me about Smokey :(. Has Topsy had anymore chicks yet? or have you not heard? Can you not have a listen to the eggs? Thats what I usually do :)

I thought I heard a chirp when I was out there a few minutes ago. It's hard to listen with all the chickens clucking, birds chirping, and other outside noises. She definitely has one egg that looks like the chick is trying to get out but I don't want to keep lifting her and bothering her. It's super hot today and she seems pretty busy trying to hatch something.

I'll leave her alone until tonight and check again, although it's hard not to rush out there to watch.

Will keep my eye out to see what happens tomorrow!

Love the scowl she seems to be giving.

She's really aggressive when she's broody haha! She's starting to get on my nerves sitting now though. She's the mother on that kept them for 22wks and she sat 3 times last year and this time its her second go! No one else gets a look in the poor girls!

We have a girl, who just started laying, sitting in the unused kitty litter box. Her name is Dani. Then there's an EE who is broody, and another who might be, though I haven't double checked. Craziness.

Definitely heard a chirp just now when I was checking for eggs. Haven't seen a chick so I think it's still hatching. Don't know how many she will end up with, but hopefully the remaining five will hatch.

Sadly nothing hatched. I'll give her a couple of days and make her get off the nest to get some water and food. If she returns I'll give her some of the shipped chicks next week. I saw the one that was probably chirping hadn't made it out but was dead in the shell.
