Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

The lightest color OE was acting quiet. So I checked her bum and found some dried poo. Cleaned it off and put her at the waterer where I have electrolyte drink for chicks. She stood there and drank quite a bit of water. I'm concerned about her. The other three OE with dark feathers seem to be doing fine. I checked all their butts and the EE butts and no one else had any issue with dried poo. So I'll be checking butts for a time and forcing them to drink at the waterer. My guess is tomorrow mommas will leave their nests and take the babies to the floor to begin training.

All the new chicks are in their respective nests under their mommas. The RIR is still out with her chicks which means I will have to go out in the thunderstorm to catch them up and put them away.
Does it ever end???? LOL...you should just keep your raingear on

Has anybody had problems with bugs eating eggs from under a broody? My brothers were checking on a broody, and said there were maggot things eating the eggs. I was not there, so I didn't get pictures.

I've not heard of that before. Definitely you'll want to look under the broody for evidence of infestations or bugs. Hope you figure it out soon.

Haha. Yes. I went out about 10 minutes ago since it's pitch black out, and of course raining. All babies were safely inside and still tucked under whom they were supposed to be tucked under. So yeah.

I was happy to see that momma RIR had managed to get her babies inside the coop without my assistance. I don't know if they used one of the ladders or if they used the 4x4s I stacked at the human door to create a jumping up place (or a trip me going in and out of the coop place).

Either way I was glad to not have to chase anyone tonight. Tomorrow should be even more fun with eight running around.

400

So this is the grand total. 5. I candled the last egg and it wasn't even internally pipped and had no movement. So I pulled the plug. It wasn't moving a few days ago either but I figured I'd just leave it. The veins that you usually see when candling were gone a few days back so I pitched the egg this morning.

When do you think she'll take them outside? They're all fluffed up and ready to go.
