Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Here are the pics of the first 4 as best as I could get. Mom doesn't like cameras very much so I have to be sneaky. Chick 5 and 6 are still drying off under mom. Egg 7 hasn't pipped into the air sac yet as far as I can see, not sure if I should pull it at this point since it will be so far behind or wait to see what tomorrow brings.

Chick 2 (on the left) Chick 1 (on the right)

Chick 3 - hard to see but face has a lot of yellow and a some brown on wing tips, must be a BO mom?

Chick 4 - my lightest chick, she wouldn't let me get a face shot, but it is lighter than the body.

First chick arrived yesterday, no pics, because he was hidden under his mother. He looks just like her, at that age, really. No idea which of the two roosters is the father.

I gave her the 4 other eggs 1,5 day later, so maybe today or tomorrow I'll have some more chicks&photos. It is so exciting again! A bit cold outside, though. Should I worry?

Happy hatching, everyone!

Congratulations KrystalRose and Eliseswart on your hatches.

I've got new chicks due this Wednesday/Thursday...hopefully a couple of Isbars and a couple of OE's (Marans/Isbars)....

Update on my 3 co-broodies raising 19 chicks between them. They are now in their own pen with my roo and 3 other bantam Cochins pullets. So far they have been an amazing group to watch. They all seem to take turns watching the littles like a big school group, even Dad. It is so adorable watching the chicks run between moms looking for the best goodies or all spread out in the sun. I've got to try and get some good group shots this weekend but for now here is Storm with a few of her babies taking a break under the coop

Adorable!

I finally saw my frist chick of 2015. His mother told him where and how to eat and drink. Isn't he cute?

Waiting for the other 4 to arrive tomorrow, hopefully. She does not leave the nest at all.

Okay, have a pullet that is looking pretty broody....of course, I won't have any fertile eggs for at least a week. I took the boys out of the pen with the girls almost a month ago to clean out the sperm so that I can start breeding. Why, oh why, do I have to have a broody hen now she couldn't wait a few weeks?

No worries as to the fertility of the eggs. It only takes a couple of days of covering to produce fertile eggs. :D

But of course broodies will ALWAYS go broody when you LEAST are ready. That's part of the genetics!
