Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Thank you so much, I guess I will let her set and see how it goes

Kind exciting. But let me just expose my ignorance a little further. Once she has laid an egg and decided to sit on it, she will not lay any more, correct? So she should just have the one egg and will just get one chick, does that sound right?

BTW, anyone in the Atlanta area looking for a beautiful mixed breed black and gold rooster? I can't keep two

Once fully broody she will quit laying. I prefer to give them 3 or 4 eggs...especially if fertility is in question. A small group will be more likely to produce 2 chicks so you don't have a lone chick and if you only give her 1 egg there is a chance of it not making it and then she doesn't get any chick.

How do I go about getting more fertile eggs...

Watch local livestock sale papers for anyone rehoming roosters, check local farmers market for anyone selling 'farm fresh eggs' and just ask them if they have a rooster in their flock and what breed the hens are (if breed mattersto you). Anyone selling fresh eggs who have a rooster will probably have fertile eggs. Then just ask if they refridgerated their eggs or not or if they would be willing to leave a few unrefridgerated for you.
The local feed mill may know of someone in the area you could get them from also.

You have been so helpful, thank you so much. We got these lovely babies and have so enjoyed watching the little community they have going on. I really want to let her keep her egg, and would love to give her a better chance at getting a chick so now, I am off to hunt for eggs

BTW, she came out for a bit while I was out feeing them this afternoon and she was sooo funny fighting with everyone who came near her all puffed up and sassy!

Yes, they are amusing when not trying to chew apart your arm for checking their eggs!:lau

My broody got feather lice. I just found a louse on two of the newly hatched chicks. Just saw this morning. Usually with my adults I use a permethrin spray. How do I treat chicks that are just days old?
