Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

OK---I bet after this you want accept any more eggs like this(pre-set on)----It can become stressful. Good Luck!

I'm hopeful I'll have a high yeild of hens (don't want a roo) so I'll cross that bridge when it comes and rehome the Roos I get. If all goes the way I want I'll end up with a RIR and a few Red Sex Links. I'll also have one or two OEGH. My desire is to get a EE or Ameracauna once I get another broody and I'll order a clutch and have everyone hatch AT THE SAME BLESSED TIME. (Or roughly)

Are you saying true red sex-links or a red sex-links layed the eggs? LOL, yea those staggered hatches are a pain, but with the hens still staying on the nest---you are lucky.

Roosters----them things sell good here----usually higher than hens for grown ones.

My ignorance is showing. The chicken who laid the eggs was a Red Sex-link....so? The chicks that hatched from those eggs have the markings of a red sex-link. Gimme the info on this. I am OBVIOUSLY new to this world but loving it and learning a ton!

Red sex-links do not breed true. The original is a cross usually between 2 breeds. Once they become adults---their eggs do not produce true red sex-links.

Not sure if you guys saw my post above. Do you separate your broody from the rest of your flock?

I separate ALL my broodies from the rest of the flock----had 72 in just 2015----80 more the 2 years before that. If I have 100 more in the next year or two----they too will be separated. I just have great hatches that way and NO problems. Moving a broody does need to be done proper so she will accept the move.
