I've got a black Sumatra that hatched 4 chicks a couple of weeks ago. She is a good mama, teaching her babies the ways of the chicken world. My blue is due this week, and I have another black Sumatra Broody due on the 16th, or a few days earlier knowing Sumatra's.

I'm actually quite amazed at my 2 week old broody chicks. They were 7 feet up a tree this morning.

Congrats on your first hatch! I was hoping for my first on 05/06 and my hen came off her nest today and would not go back on. She had started w/ 5 eggs then one went bad. She did fine with that. Then today I went out and she is standing out of the nest squawking with a broken, bloody egg shell. Seems like she tried to take it out of the nest. The remaining 3 eggs were cold

She refused to go back on. I don't have an incubator. There were no remains of a chick that I could see. I had noticed she was not laying on this particular egg yesterday and I tucked it back under her. It's her first time brooding. She must have known better than me, but now she refuses to go back an finish with the remaining 3 eggs. Only 5 days from hatch

Hopefully she will go broody again.

Funny ...hens right back on the roost next to her boyfriend tonight like nothing happened. Guess I'm the only one who's not happy about this..lol!

Isn't nature something to hold in awe!!! An egg is laid and in as few as 1 day, it can be eaten or in as many as 21, it can become another chicken who can start the whole cycle all over again! God always amazed me!!!

Congratulations to all who are hatching!!

As a 1st timer also, this feeling is so awesome! I can't wait for one of my others to go broody! I know they must think I am crazy cuz I am analyzing their every move on and off the nesting boxes to see if someone else will take this job seriously!

Hugs to you WonderChicken! I am so sorry! I can only imagine how devastating that would be! I am praying for a successful easy time next time.

Right now we have 6 out of 11 hatched out. I am so proud of my Cinderella!!

She is a good 1st time momma! Hoping for more to hatch tomorrow! And maybe I can get the whole family together for a 1st photo to show all the surrogate Aunts and Uncles at BYC!!!
