Thankls for asking Chicklette1 she passed away yesterday afternoon.
still don't have any idea what it was, and thank goodness everyone else is acting normal, well normal for chickens
and her chicks are doing fine they are 4 weeks today..
So sorry you lost her but I guess there are some symptoms we cannot account for. At this point, it is just great that all the rest are fine. Those babies grow up so fast with or without mama! Only good things for you now!

yep large fowl, there should be a differnce in weight from one that has a chick in it to one that doesn't. Hope your dad has good news for you, can you get some baby chicks to put under mama if perchance these aren't viable? you have a rooster?

Thanks C1, the babies are doing great running around with some their own age and some that are a week older so they have friends
The only chick that I could find around here for my singleton 2 day old was a chick that was about 2 weeks old. I took a chance and put the 2 together and they got along great. I have 1/2 of the brooder covered on top so it does not get too hot for the older chick and it is so cute the way she thought the bigger chick was her mom and she follows her everywhere. She is a bantie and the older chick is a standard so there is quite a size difference but they are very happy. The little one sleeps where the light hits and the bigger one sleeps in the shade. So far, so good!
my broody is doing great today with her four little chicks. She brought them outside and kept losing them, so I had to take the ramp off the pop door (they kept getting under it) so they could just hop up, etc. She is getting very weird, although not with me. She poofed up like a turkey and had a little hen fight when another chicken got within three feet of the babies - that I can understand.. but then she did it for no reason at all. Just again poofed up like a weird turkey, jumped up in the air and squawked a bunch then settled down again. Scared the heck out of the babies, but there was no other hen there and it didn't seem to be related to my presence. Hormones!!
