Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

both times I have had a broody hen hatch out - they have been with the flock. They are very protective and no one but the teen chicks are "silly" enough to come to close.. they learn fast.

Right now she is sitting on them in an old, unused utility sink. But obviously the sides will be too tall for the chicks to get in and out of once their hatched. So maybe I needn't worry about it. Mine are currently being raised in with the flock with no problems so far. Molly has 10 chicks in an open pen on the floor of the coop and there are 6 other hens who don't seem to give a hoot. In fact, they are quite curious towards the youngsters and often try to pick up the pieces of food Molly is tid-bitting. We had one run in with our GLW when Molly took the chicks outside for the first time. The GLW got really close to our BSL chick and pecked it. Molly immediately turned around and flogged her right in the face multiple times. There have been no other problems and the babies are a week old now

We gave our white rock 18 eggs last month and a day after the hatch we had to force her off the nest cause one of them busted and the smell was bad and she needed to start eating and i think we are going to start candling the eggs on day 18 to make sure she doesn't have any more duds since my mom says after the due hatch date she has to get up off them

Just wanted to jump in here cause we are very excited about our Silkie CareLess (cause she could care less that our DD's scooping her up and loving on her)! She is setting on eggs, today is the 19th day and we picked up her eggs tonight and tapped on a few of them and they peeped in the shell! No sign of pipping yet but I am not going to freak out that things arent going right! These are our first chickens, our first hatch and CareLess's too! Wish us luck here in GIg Harbor, Washington!

We actually have another Silkie Hen that went broody last week, so Josephine has 7 eggs under her, CareLess has 6, They are a black and a blue and Joe is a splash roo. They are such nice chickens and we are certainly learning alot as we go along. We have 2 buckeye pullets, 2 pullets that I'm not sure what they are (but one may be a rooster) and a black orpington pullet. We are having lots of fun! Thanks for the welcome!
