That is too funny, NellaBean. your girls are lovely and the chicks are precious too. I'm right next door in N.C. and I have had 9broodys with 2 sitting on nothing. I know what you mean.

stony I have to agree the weather has been brutal and I do think it has to affect them, it sure does me. Hoping the 2 from your other broody hatches safely!!

Mrs. Mucket :

What a bunch of cuties you all have!

NellaBean--The white chick with broody #3--what breed is it? Its comb looks like it's growing quickly!

Father was a Cochin, Mother was a White Leghorn. He is definitely a HE.

The female version of the same cross? The little white with black splotches one.

I just listened in on the broody who lost a chick. There is peeping! I shined a light on her, and got SERIOUS stink eye! So I'm hoping her remaining 3 eggs work out for her. The other broody with 2 eggs, just gives me stink eye, and it seems quiet....

What's even worse is that this is switcherooskie land here. An example? The cute mottled cochin with the chicks?

This one

she was sitting on AIR for a couple weeks.

So the white leghorn/giant hen hatched out 3 chicks.....and kept kicking other eggs out.

So I took the eggs and gave them to the mottled cochin who was sitting on air.

She hatched out 3 chicks.

The white leghorn/giant was ignoring 1 of her 3 chicks. So I took her and gave her to the mottled cochin.

The eggs left under the mottled cochin were moved to a different mottled cochin. she hatched out one chick.....I took it and gave it to the other mottled cochin (who now has 4 or 5 chicks).

That cochin had 2 eggs left and she took those eggs and moved her nest so she could sit with her other mottled cochin friend. They hatched out 1 chick this morning. I took it and gave it to the same mottled cochin hen with the other chicks......because the eggs are staggered so I need the other hens to keep sitting to hatch them out.

Tonight 2 more chicks had hatched out under the 2 mottled hens sitting togehter AND a 3rd hen decided to sit with them.

Crazy chickens.

I have a broody close to hatching. When I checked her today, she seemed to be eating something.
It was an egg so I took it and there was not a chick inside.
Obviously not fertile, it did not smell..she seems fine with the rest of the eggs............
I have not experienced this before and am wondering if anyone else has???????????
Thanks,
Toni
