Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

I'd go ahead and move mama and chicks and rest of eggs, can you make her a safer place where there won't be in distruptions? it should be closed till all eggs have hatched that are going to. Even inside the coop would be okay as long as she can't get out and noone can get in. How far off the floor is the nest box she is in now.? Chick could have fell out and of course mama has no way of getting it back into the nest. I had that happen before. Now all my nest boxes are floor level. Please update when you know.

Yet again I have nothing to add to the wonderful Miss Lydia!

OK...here's what has happened since:

The baby that fell on the floor of the coop did not make it. I have been doing some reading and it looks like he/she was just not ready yet. Its shell was all bloody inside. I have about a 4" lip in front of all nest boxes and the floor is about a foot above. What I think happened is that the other hen wanted to "eat" the cracked egg and was getting very aggressive about being in there with momma. "other" hen is still being obnoxious and in the favored nestbox (that has since been cleaned, but now has no bedding) as we speak.

I have moved momma to a pet carrier and locked her in, they are in the garage-which btw will be safe from Irene. I moved the remaining eggs and baby too. She stepped on it a few times though and I haven't heard any peeping recently. BUT momma did make a nest in the pet carrier once she settled down a bit. Now we wait....

This is definitely a learning experience....

Hopefully the other is fine and drying and resting,. and sounds like mama is settleing in. Keep us up to date and we'll be waiting to hear and hoping everything is going to be okay now..

ok ... driving myself crazy now .... I wonder how you calculate your hatch date. Is the date the eggs are set day 0 or day 1? I set my eggs on August 6 so should the 26th or 27th be "hatch" date? I've seen it done both ways. As a 5 year old waiting for Christmas - I'm hoping Friday!

LOST Chick Heather - I'm following along with anticipation and learning a lot. Thanks for your blow by blow posts. We set 11 eggs under our broody Australorp, Weezy, on 8/21, so I'm hoping for something to happen on or around 9/11 (best way to deal with that day I can think of, really). She's in the coop, comfy in a box, and for the most part the other girls are leaving her be. She gets up once a day for a dust bath, a little food and some water, tho I am going to put some water closer to her to make that more accessible.

We're going to let her hatch out in the coop, but will have our old rabbit hutch ready for emergency back up service should things in the main coop go south!

the day you set is day 0

stony where have you been? just because you set the record of the most amount of broodys doesn't mean we don't need you expertise. We have missed your posts. Broodys still a hatchin and problems cropping up, excuse the puns lol.
