Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

She still seems very placid and flat for them to be trying to peck their way out. I can't help but go peek in thru the window at her, about every hour or so, but I am really trying to make myself think about something else....

First of all - Rachel! Not Alice!! I was thinking of your hen!! Secondly, Weezy kept pretty darn placid as well, it was the rest of the coop that was kicking up a fuss. I didn't think she'd started yet and I peeked my head over the lip of the nesting box and saw a tiny fuzzy back and then whapped the back of my head on the top of the boxes in surprise!

Ok, now I want to pry her back off that nest and see what is going on in there!!!!

gonna play it cool...gonna put the hen down and back slowly away.....

Thanks for putting up with me, during the countdown to First Hatch!

My chick hatched this morning at 4 am in the bator. I let him rest and dry off for about an hour before I brought him to mom while it was still dark to see if she would accept him. Apparently it's a little partridge silkie/faverolle mix. This is the little one wrapped in a towel before we went outside.

I took Puff's 3 eggs that she's been sitting on that are due next week and slipped him under. She accepted him right away and softly clucked to him. A few days ago, one of my other silkies was in full broody mood, so I slipped the 3 eggs due next week under her to take care of for me. Hoping she will hatch them for me. This is a really fuzzy picture but it was the only one I could get of the baby under mom before I came inside. That's the baby peeking out from under mom.

They are all doing very well, Mama Hen is GREAT. I'm giving her all sorts of goodies to try to get her feathers/wattles looking better, but she's got lots of energy and is the best mama hen EVER

The little black & yellow chick is the one I saved from being shrinkwrapped - his/her name is Lucky. I don't know what all kinds I have

but I know the little reddish one is a Rhode Island Red. Other than that, can y'all tell me what I might have gotten? They could be EE, BLRW, blue andalusian (or black, splash and i think white??), welsummer or golden lakenvelder.

Thanks everyone!
