Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Mine did EXACTLY the same thing - every day! I think it is part of mom teaching them to scratch and to come when she finds something good. I kept putting it out and mom even seemed to expect it. If I didn't fill that dish, she'd scratch away at the dish as if to remind me.

I hope you feel better soon - so we get to see some pictures!!!!

I think your girls would like a handsome Sumatra to take care of them! And any Sumatra hens would love your game hen.

I mean...just look at head roo Sammy pictured above. All of my girls love him, and he takes good care of them.

now Loverboy, one of the blue Sumatra Roo's, he prefers RIR's and Black Austrolops. I've never, ever seen him mate with a Sumatra hen. He will however chase off a young roo, who is harrassing a Sumatra hen. Good boys.

now Loverboy is one of the original ferrel Sumatra's. He always lived in a tree. BUT now he will sometimes spend the night in the coop his girls live in. If he chooses to stay outside, it is in a tree above their coop. He does love his girls!

His eye looks funny, and it isn't just the pic. He is blind in that eye.

Stony: both your boys have pretty feathering. It's nice to know there are good Roos out there! I have a really sweet JB roo but I need an LF roo for my LF girls. They've started picking on each other every so often and I'm tired of cleaning combs! A good roo would help mediate if my JB roo is any indication.

Heather, BG, & ML: Thanks for letting me know my mamma hasn't gone cuckoo! She's been so sweet, even letting me pet or pick up her babies. She came out of the coop for a snack and to visit. The whole time she was clucking loudly at the chicks up the ramp in the coop. I could totally tell she was hollering, "and remember I said to STAY up there!!" They peeped away at her, but they all stayed inside. She went back in and today took over the eggs laid by her coop mates. I found her sitting on two new eggs laid today and her three chicks. Apparently three wasn't enough for her!

TY, and there are a lot more roo's !

My boys are good with their girls. They don't seem interested in breaking up an all out girl on girl fight however! If the hens are fighting like roosters, the boys stay clear!
lol.png
The girls even call for their man after they lay an egg, to see where they are freeranging. Then they rejoin. My one black Austrolop really has a set of lungs on her!

Leave it to a bunch of guys to just sit back and watch a girl on girl fight!! I've learned a ton about human men watching Roos!!

very good! TY!

on a sad note, it was a bad night on Stonykill Farm. A weasle found it's way into a coop, and killed 5 Sumatra hens, 2 Sumatra roo's, and my only 2 Black Austrolop/Sumatra mixes. 1 roo, 1 hen. So today is tighten up coop day, and process dead chickens day.

It got in there thru a tiny hole, and ate only the necks of the chickens. I am now at war!

So sorry Stony! You have just said how much you liked those two birds

Is there any risk of contamination in processing out the dead? I would be worried because I don't know much about it.
